Not my favorite Amanda Quick. Book of Life Deborah Harkness. Quick did a great job of setting it up. I loved the fact that Lucinda saves herself in the book over and over again. Maanda the same time, it was kind of a mess.
Review On the whole, the Arcane series has been a mixed bag for me but The Perfect Poison is more of a hit than a miss. So now it’s up to Caleb Jones to find the fern for Lucinda, clear her reputation somewhat, maybe plunge headfirst into ppoison passionate affair with her, provide a matchmaker for her cousin, and—most important of all—stay alive to tell the tale. If you like predictable dialogues and cheesy romance, it is better then most out there. Furthermore, I do not mind having to suspend disbelief, after all I’m a fan of Fantasy, but only in the correct setting.

Caleb Jones has started a private detective agency to investigate paranormal crimes. Arcane Society Contemporary 2. But none are so closely guarded as those of the shadowy Arcane Society. Long story short, I liked this one much better than “The Third Circle.
Caleb agrees to take her loison as soon as he finishes up the one he is working on. In addition he finds a link to the notorious chemist Basil Hulsey who has been working on a drug to enhance psychic ability, supposedly developed by Sylvester Jones in the ‘s.
What I Didn’t Like: I also appreciated the opportunity for characters from two of the former novels to make appearances in this book, as well as a possible partial profile of Fallon Jones’s talent. One a side note, the explanation of Caleb’s mental anguish is particularly fulfilling, especially for fans of Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose – just love the intertextuality. All this takes place in the early ‘s so we are introduced to a different society around which this conspiracy takes place, as well as an early scene of romance.

I had no trouble with the paranormal aspects of the story and the characters’ talents, they didn’t overwhelm the story and the little bits I might have trouble with I put it down as continuity knowledge I did not have. These Arcane Society books are so good. It felt like this book was cut down by about half, and lots of actually important information got left out. It’s billed as a romance, but it’s really more of a paranormal mystery with a love story. I liked this one enough to pull out others in the series from the boxes.
